“A two-story house study for a narrow, deep lot under a canopy of live oaks in Coconut Grove. The ground floor opens front and back so the garden runs straight through the house, from the street side to a rear patio and a narrow plunge pool along the side wall. The upper floor steps back from the street face, leaving a deep shaded terrace behind sliding ipe shutters and slat screens, and keeping clear of the oaks. Flat roofs with thin concrete edges cap warm light-grey lime stucco walls, and sand-coloured polished concrete floors carry the same tone from the living spaces onto the terrace. It is a study of how to build two stories in the Grove without losing the trees or the shade.”
